Bad news on the injury front as news is breaking that tight end DJ Grant’s knee injury suffered last night is serious and will sideline him for the entire 2009 season. A source close to Grant’s family told BON, “Out for the year. Lots of tears. No breaks.”
Terrible luck for the kid and of course for the tight end depth chart. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Update: It’s official, he’s out for the year due to “damage to multiple ligaments in his left knee.” Quotes from Mack below:
“We’re disappointed for D.J.,” said Mack Brown. “He’s worked really hard and was ready to compete for playing time this season. We’ll miss having him out on the field but we will be there to support him throughout his rehab. Fortunately we’ll still have him around learning the position and helping the team at practices and meetings. He’s a great kid and we know he’ll get healthy, work hard in his rehabilitation and has a bright future.”
The Texas training staff gave everyone some bad news yesterday when they announced that tight end would miss the entire 2009 season due to the devastating knee injury he suffered last season. According to his surgeon, Irby recovered from ligament damage well but his nerve damage was severe and has resulted in drop foot. The condition is serious and sometimes permanent.
Irby comments on his injury and rehab below:
“First and foremost, I want to thank all of my teammates, coaches and family because a big thing this injury has taught me is how much support we have here,” Irby said. “That support has helped in the rehab process and will continue to drive me to get back on the field.
“The injury has taught me a lot of things like patience. It was devastating at first, but I’ve come a long way. I realize this is an obstacle I have to overcome and it’s going to take time. I feel like I’ve made the best of the situation and am working to make sure something positive comes out of this.
“I’m disappointed that I’m going to miss the season, but that’s not going to stop me from having an impact on this team. I’m going to help the coaches in any way I can and work with the tight ends, whether it’s watching film, or just trying to be a resource for them. I’m really going to work with the young guys to try and get them ready to help the team.”
We wish Blaine the best in his continued rehab and recovery.

Freshman defensive tackle has been forced to leave school due to a kidney condition. There is no word on the seriousness of his condition or if there is any chance Jarvis will return to UT. The young man’s health is obviously the primary concern.
From the official UT site:
Longhorn redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jarvis Humphrey has withdrawn from classes at The University of Texas due to the continuation of a medical condition. Doctors identified a concern with his kidney during a pre-participating physical last year which sidelined him for much of his time at Texas, including all of 2009 spring drills.
“Jarvis is a great young man,” said head coach Mack Brown. “His health is our number one priority and has been since his condition was identified when he arrived at Texas. We will continue to help him any way we can.”
We’ll keep Jarvis in our thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery for him.
Lots of news this week that we’re just now catching up on. When the Horns were coming back to practice earlier this week from Spring Break word was out that he was working hard and impressing the coaches and had risen to the top of the running back depth chart. His performance on the field also had the Texas coaches worrying less about his weight:
Johnson’s personal battle of the bulge has dogged him throughout his college career. But [Mack] Brown is learning to gauge other factors than merely the scales when looking at the 5-foot-11, 255-pound Johnson and his productivity and value for the Longhorns.
“We’ve quit trying to get Cody to lose weight, we’re working with body fat and we think that’s the key to it,” Brown said. “He looks like he’s in good shape. He came back in good shape after the break. We feel like that he’s doing a really good job.”
But then on Wednesday Johnson tweaked his hamstring and threw the whole thing back in the air. The injury isn’t too serious but he will miss the next two weeks of practice including the spring scrimmage on April 5th. This will open things up for and Fozzy Whittaker to get more practice reps and impress the coaching staff, and also possibly may make it even less likely that incoming true freshman will redshirt.
In fantastic news for the fortunes of the Texas baseball team, catcher Cameron Rupp’s shoulder injury is not as serious as initially feared. Rupp took a pitch directly to his collarbone in Tuesday’s game against and the rumors were he would be out an extended period with a broken collarbone. Instead he was back out at practice already today and suffered only a deep bruise to his shoulder/chest area.
There is no word yet whether Rupp will be available for this weekend’s series against .
Football season never really ends in the state of Texas, but the start of spring drills is one of the biggest days for every die hard fan. The team hits the field for their first practice tomorrow and several big pieces of news came out today. Injuries and a huge position switch have Longhorn fans buzzing.
The biggest and most surprising news is that second string quarterback went to the Texas coaches today and requested he be moved to wide receiver. This is a move many Internet coaches fans have been calling for for over a year, but not one expected to happen before he gave it at least one more shot during spring practices. Despite struggles, the Texas coaching staff felt Chiles was good enough to be the team’s clear number two quarterback but if he was going to have an NFL future it is clearly as a wide receiver. His position change leaves the Longhorns with only two scholarship players at QB and likely means incoming freshman will not be redshirting for the 2009 season.
It was also announced that 9 players would be missing spring practices due to injury. Sadly, safety has been forced to give up football after several serious injuries and surgeries. He made several starts as a sophomore and missed all of last season with a shoulder injury. Oduegwu, a former academic All-Big 12 selection, is on set to graduate on schedule with a Youth & Community Studies major.
Redshirt freshman defensive tackle will also miss practices with what appears to be a serious kidney ailment. Team trainers said “that Humphrey’s condition would be watched.” Defensive tackle is one of the team’s greatest depth concerns, but with this news a young man’s health definitely takes primary concern.
The other players that will miss spring drills are P , TE , DE , DE , WR , DB , and Alex Zumberge.

Bad news on the injury front this week for the game. We knew starting center would be out with a knee injury but cornerback and tight end are also out. The true freshman Williams has been big for the secondary filling in and playing well while starting corner was out, fortunately Brown is not on this week’s injury report.
Listed as questionable are two key members of the defensive line in end and tackle . Both players could play and rumors are both should be on the field today in Lawrence. Safety is also questionable.
With the offensive line injury, off field, and performance issues the last few weeks it is very good news that left tackle is probable.
The official injury report for is out and is the worst one of the year. As expected, defensive end due to his left knee injury suffered against . Also listed as out for the game are corner and punter . Senior wide receiver is probable despite his back problems, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get only limited time unless he’s needed.
Senior fullback is done for the year after tearing the ACL in his left knee during the Texas win over . Despite scholarship offers from other Division 1A schools, the young man out of Pflugerville decided to walk on at Texas. Tiemann started games at fullback during both his sophomore and junior seasons while also spending time at defensive end and contributing on special teams. His efforts earned him a scholarship before the beginning of this season.
Read the official university release below:
Longhorn senior fullback Luke Tiemann sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee in Texas’ 52-10 victory over Arkansas on Saturday, and will require season-ending surgery, UT Head Athletic Trainer for Football Kenny Boyd confirmed Sunday.
“It’s really disappointing that this injury is cutting my senior year short,” Tiemann said. “Being a part of this team has meant so much to me, and although I can’t help the team on the field, I’ll still be right here with my teammates cheering them on and helping any way I can while I’m rehabbing and finishing school.”
Tiemann is a fifth-year fullback who has also played defensive end and contributed on special teams during his 34-game career. He began his career as a walk-on and earned a scholarship in August 2008 after making the switch to fullback midway through 2006. He had played in all four games in 2008.
In 2007, Tiemann saw action in 11 games, including one start, at fullback and on special teams. He played in all 13 games at fullback and on special teams in 2006 and also saw limited action on defense at linebacker. The Pflugerville native is a 2007 first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and a six-time member of UT’s Athletics Director’s Honor Roll.
“Luke is one of our great senior leaders,” said head coach Mack Brown. “He got a standing ovation when we presented him his scholarship in August, and he has, and will continue to have, a great impact on this team. He is as tough as they come, and has contributed so much from the full back position and on special teams. On top of that, he is an outstanding student. His presence on the field will be missed and someone will have to step up to fill his void.”
Get well soon Luke! Hook ‘em!
