As was rumored last week, [tag]Oklahoma[/tag] quarterback Sam Bradford announced today through a university release that he would be having season-ending shoulder surgery. If the surgery goes as planned Bradford intends to leave OU and enter the 2010 NFL Draft.

Not the news you want to hear three hours before the opening kickoff, but three important Longhorn contributors will miss at least today’s game due to academic issues. Wide receiver [tag]Brandon Collins[/tag], safety [tag]Christian Scott[/tag], and cornerback [tag]Deon Beasley[/tag] are out against Louisiana-Monroe today because of “unresolved academic issues”. All three players would have seen significant playing time today, particularly Collins and Scott. Fortunately receiver and secondary are two of the Horns’ deepest spots.

The academic issues appear to be with the NCAA requirement of progress towards a degree, and the reason the news is coming so late is that the players are likely appealing grade decisions to the university. This could be a one game issue or these guys could miss the entire season.

There were rumors about Collins and Beasley, but Scott surprising. He was getting a lot of love from the UT coaches and I find it hard to believe [tag]Will Muschamp[/tag] gives him so many first team snaps at safety if they expect him out long.

We’ll keep you updated.

Bad news on the injury front as news is breaking that tight end DJ Grant’s knee injury suffered last night is serious and will sideline him for the entire 2009 season. A source close to Grant’s family told BON, “Out for the year. Lots of tears. No breaks.”

Terrible luck for the kid and of course for the tight end depth chart. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Update: It’s official, he’s out for the year due to “damage to multiple ligaments in his left knee.” Quotes from Mack below:

“We’re disappointed for D.J.,” said Mack Brown. “He’s worked really hard and was ready to compete for playing time this season. We’ll miss having him out on the field but we will be there to support him throughout his rehab. Fortunately we’ll still have him around learning the position and helping the team at practices and meetings. He’s a great kid and we know he’ll get healthy, work hard in his rehabilitation and has a bright future.”

Freshman defensive tackle [tag]Jarvis Humphrey[/tag] has been forced to leave school due to a kidney condition. There is no word on the seriousness of his condition or if there is any chance Jarvis will return to UT. The young man’s health is obviously the primary concern.

From the official UT site:

Longhorn redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jarvis Humphrey has withdrawn from classes at The University of Texas due to the continuation of a medical condition. Doctors identified a concern with his kidney during a pre-participating physical last year which sidelined him for much of his time at Texas, including all of 2009 spring drills.

“Jarvis is a great young man,” said head coach Mack Brown. “His health is our number one priority and has been since his condition was identified when he arrived at Texas. We will continue to help him any way we can.”

We’ll keep Jarvis in our thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery for him.

Cedric Benson

Cedric Benson

Two separate grand juries Thursday ruled there was not enough evidence against former Longhorn and former Chicago Bears running back [tag]Cedric Benson[/tag] to proceed to trial. All charges against Benson stemming from his two alcohol-related arrests early this summer have now been dropped. Travis County Attorney David Escamilla told the Austin American-Statesman that both cases had weaknesses. “The boating while intoxicating case lacked a field-sobriety test,” Escamilla said. “The second one, in the video on the DWI, he appeared very good on the video.”

Benson has not commented today but Sam Bassett, Benson’s Austin-based attorney did speak to several media outlets. “I hope that this situation reminds us all that not every person who is arrested for a crime is guilty,” Bassett said. “This means that there was a finding by the grand juries that there was no probable cause to believe that Cedric Benson was guilty of a crime.”

Now that his legal matters are behind him Cedric will continue to try to get back into the NFL. He has worked out for several teams over the last several weeks but with two sets of criminal charges hanging over him NFL GMs were appropriately cautious. He hasn’t lived up to his billing so far, but he’ll get his second chance somewhere to make the most of his career and more importantly his life.
