The Texas men took home third place in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships yesterday. Florida State won the title easily with 67 points, finishing well in front of second place LSU and the Horns.
Two Texas football stars played a part in that finish. Defensive end/shot putter [tag]Brian Robison[/tag] narrowly missed another national title with his throw of 66 feet 5.25 inches. The winner of the event, Garrett Johnson of Florida State, bested him by less than two inches. Excellent performance by Robison in what will likely be his last for the Texas Track team, as next year this time he’ll likely be preparing himself for an NFL career.
Running back/sprinter [tag]Jamaal Charles[/tag] competed in the 100- and 200-meter events, as well as the 4×100-meter relay. He started well in the 100 before the leaders pulled away. His 10.27 time into a stiff headwind earned him a fifth place finish in the event. Not a bad performance for a freshman competing against Olympic sprinters. A particularly impressive feat for a running back, the majority of football/track sprinters are wide receivers or cornerbacks. Charles can definitely claim the title of college football’s fastest running back next season.

The first Rivals100 list is out for 2007 and it had a decidedly burnt orange hue. Nine Texas Longhorn commitments are on the list and three receive five-star status. Guard/tackle [tag]Tray Allen[/tag] is the highest ranked Horn at number eight, followed by the two quarterbacks [tag]John Chiles[/tag] and John Brantley at twelve and thirteen respectively.
Not a ton of controversy (and keep in mind this is an early list that will definitely change) over the rankings but there are a couple of things that stand out. Hempstead wide receiver Terrance Toliver is a tremendous raw talent but hasn’t put up big numbers despite playing at a small school. Definite potential but a bit of a reach as the nation’s number ten overall prospect. Interesting to note that Toliver has big time talent but Mack Brown has decided not to pursue him, there’s usually a reason for that.
The omission of future Texas linebacker [tag]Keenan Robinson[/tag] from the list is a little surprising, Robinson’s camp performances have been impressive and he’s been rising quickly. His latest performance at last weekend’s Texas Junior Day had people talking. There are reports that he’s a near lock to be on the next top 100 list.
To put things in perspective, the Longhorns have more top 100 commitments than any other school has total commits. With three, or possibly four, more spots available, it’ll be interesting to see how the coaching staff decides to use those final scholarship offers.
I worry about injury, but I love Jamaal keeping quick while getting stronger.
On Tuesday Drew Stubbs became the highest Texas Longhorn draft pick taken in the MLB draft since 1992 when Calvin Murray was taken with the 7th pick. The Atlanta, TX native Drew Stubbs was chosen with the 8th pick overall by the Cincinnati Reds. Longhorn pitcher Kyle McCulloch was also taken in the first round, with the World Series Champion Chicago White Sox selecting him with the 29th overall pick.
This makes it 13 Texas Longhorn that have been selected in the first round since Augie Garrido has been at the helm, and the second time in the last 2 years that two UT players were selected in the first round.
The Detroit Cass Tech star defensive tackle finally made his much-publicized unofficial visit to the 40 Acres.

[tag]Cat Osterman[/tag] was dominant today in Texas’ win over Arizona State in the opening round of the Women’s College World Series. Osterman recorded 18 of the 21 outs via the strikeout and her offense is able to provide just enough for the Longhorns to pick up the 2 – 0 win and head into the winner’s bracket.
Cat had the Sun Devil hitters off balance all game long. They swung at pitches out of the zone while watching strikes go right down the middle, they were intimidated and had no interest in being in the batter’s box. The Texas offense didn’t light up the scoreboard but Amber Hall’s clutch hit scored second baseman Chez Sievers in the fourth inning to go up 1 – 0. Desiree Williams then lead off the fifth with a line shot off the left field foul pole to put the Longhorns up two, an almost insurmountable lead with Osterman in the circle. Osterman retired the last 18 Sun Devil batters to finish off the game.
The team will face the Arizona Wildcats Friday at 5pm on ESPN2.
