Comparing the human to the computer polls, the Big 10 is overrated the most by voters.

The University of [tag]Oklahoma[/tag] issued a statement today that two players had been kicked off the football team for receiving “extra compensation above that to which they were entitled, related to their employment at a private business.” No names were cited in the release but numerous outlets are reporting that one of the two players was starting quarterback Rhett Bomar. The other player is reportedly Bomar’s roommate, starting right guard J.D. Quinn.

Bomar was working at an Oklahoma City car dealership, the same one that made news by letting Adrian Peterson “borrow” a Lexus for several weeks, and reported $18,000 of income for the year despite only working about five hours per week. That would work out to about $70 per hour (if he was working 52 weeks a year) for whatever he was supposedly doing for the dealership. Like Al Capone and possibly Barry Bonds, I guess it was the IRS that finally did Bomar in.

This obviously has big Big 12 and national implications as the Sooners were being touted by many experts as national title contenders going into the season. They were also voted as Big 12 favorites by the media. Now they’ll head into next week’s practices without their starting quarterback and no clear answer as to who will take over the position. We’ll likely see QB-turned-WR Paul Thompson moved back to quarterback where he’ll battle with JUCO transfer Joey Halzle and a true freshman for the starting nod. The Sooners’ QB situation just became as murky as the Longhorns’.

I guess this brings new meaning to the term “Bomar’d.”

Rumors are flying that this is just the beginning and that more suspensions will be coming soon. Adrian Peterson’s name has of course been mentioned due to his relationship with Big Red Sports/Imports. The other names are D.J. Wolfe, projected starting cornerback, and Garrett Hartley their starting placekicker. Now these are definitely just rumors, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more of this in the next couple of days. It is hard to believe that just two players were involved when we know that other OU players had relationships with this car dealership. (5:30 pm)

Great news for the Tennesse Titans and for [tag]Vince Young[/tag], the two parties have agreed on a $58 million deal with $25.7 million guaranteed. Not all of the details are available, but both the total value of the contract and the guaranteed money are impressive. No one can argue with his decision to leave Texas early now.

Fantastic job by Vince and his much maligned agent Major Adams getting the deal done quickly and getting Vince into training camp on time. Being in there from day one is huge if the Titans have any ideas about playing him this season.

McCoy & Snead aren’t Vince Young but they don’t need to be for this team to win.

It appears that Ramonce Taylor was unable to get his grades and his life in order as he is transferring from the University of Texas. The news is confirmed from both the athletic department and Taylor himself. There is no official destination yet, but the only school mentioned has been Texas College in Tyler.

Not a gigantic surprise, though I think a lot of us were still hoping things would work out and he’d back with the team this season. News and rumors had Taylor still attending classes at UT this summer, working out with the team, and that eventually all charges against him related to his May arrest will be dropped. He seemed to be doing everything he could to prove to the coaches he deserved another chance, but they either didn’t believe that was the case or Ramonce simply didn’t get his schoolwork in order. Disappointing.

I wonder why he and Mike Williams (defensive end version) chose to attend an NAIA school in Texas College instead of a Division 1-AA school like Texas State or Sam Houston State? There’s less exposure at a school like that and lower caliber competition. It seems for players with NFL aspirations, such as Ramonce, there would be better options out there for them. You see guys from 1-AA or even Division II of III drafted all the time, not too many from the NAIA.

Taylor was a big part of the Longhorns national title run last year, providing 15 TD’s and gamebreaking ability, so it’s tough to lose a player of his caliber. Fortunately, running back and wide receiver are two of the team’s deepest positions. Taylor will always be a Longhorn wherever he ends up, and we hope he gets his head on straight so he is able to fulfill his NFL potential.
