Starting weakside linebacker Drew Kelson is listed as doubtful on the injury report and will likely miss this weekend’s matchup with the Mean Green of North Texas. He injured his ankle Wednesday in practice and was spotted around campus today with a boot on it. Bad news for our linebacker depth for sure, I’m definitely praying he’s back and 100% for Ohio State.

Dead on. Aggies have been recruiting well, but are still losing ground to Horns.

Rumor has it that Texas Tech senior and preseason All-American Jarrett Hicks could be in jeopardy of missing the season. Both he and top WR recruit Michael Crabtree are both appealing issues to the NCAA related to academic issues. Hicks has already lost one appeal on his case and Coach Mike Leach didn’t sound to positive about the issue. Both players will likely miss this weekend’s game against SMU. Losing an All-American and another member of the two-deep would obviously be a big problem for Tech’s pass happy offense.

Our Thoughts

Brian – In my inaugural Heisman poll of the season I have more of a #1 and #1a then I do a 1 through 5. Adrian Peterson and Brady Quinn are the two clear favorites with the media and for once I agree with them.

In my opinion, Peterson has at least one advantage over Quinn. As a running back, he can play on an average team and still be a Heisman winner if he puts up the stats. The last five Heisman winning quarterbacks have lost a total of 4 regular season games in the years they won the award, if Notre Dame loses two games or more voters will take that out on Quinn. Of course if Notre Dame somehow makes it through the season without a loss, Quinn will receive every single vote. (No not every single first place vote, every 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place vote on every single ballot.)

Jamaal Charles is still a season away from really making a run at the award. Selvin Young has looked great this summer and fall and has really become one of Texas’ vocal leaders, which means Charles won’t get the 25 carries per game he’d need if he was to be a finalist this year.

Matt – I am in full agreement with Brian’s top two choices, as I also have Adrian Peterson and Brady Quinn as the cream of the crop when it comes to this year’s Heisman race, the main difference between the two is that Peterson has the talent and Quinn has the media.

At #3 I have Troy Smith, who I think is going to have an outstanding year, but what is holding him back is all of the other weapons OSU has on their team. For me it is hard to say you are the best player in college football, when you have 2 other potential candidates (Ginn, Pittman) on your team.

For my 5th choice, I always like to pick a dark horse who I think will do some good things this year. Auburn should have a big year this year, and I think Irons is going play a huge role in that success.

Some love for JC, Okam, and especially Coach Chizik.

Man, $161 million? Each game brings in 35,000 out of town visitors? Now those are some serious stats.

Sam AchoThe Texas Longhorns continued to add to their fantastic recruiting class on Monday with a surprise commitment from defensive end [tag]Sam Acho[/tag]. The 6-foot-2 250 pounder from Dallas St. Mark’s exploded onto everyone’s recruiting radar with several big time camp performances this summer. He went from virtual unknown to holding offers from national powers such as Oklahoma, Texas, USC, and Virginia in just a handful of weeks. Texas made a strong impression on Acho during an unofficial visit to Austin in early August, but he was expected to take a little more time before making a decision.

Acho was rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals before his meteoric rise and reportedly will be elevated to 4-star status during the current reshuffling of their 2007 prospect rankings. National top 100 status is a possibility for the young man who excels in the classroom as well as on the football field.

Acho is the 23rd member of the Longhorns’ 2007 recruiting class and the fourth defensive lineman to give the team a verbal pledge. He joins DE Russell Carter and defensive tackles Andre Jones and Michael Wilcoxon as future anchors of the defensive front line. The Horns are still strongly pursuing 5-star DT Joseph Barksdale out of Detroit’s Cass Tech High School. Acho’s commitment likely leaves just one or two more slots available in this class.
