Didn’t see that coming. Could be bad news for Louisville.
Mack Brown has named former University of Arizona defensive coordinator and current 49ers’ special teams coach Larry Mac Duff as the new Texas co-defensive coordinator. Mac Duff will be the co-DC with Duane Akina and will be in charge of the linebackers, something he has extensive experience with unlike previous coordinator Gene Chizik. Akina is a longtime friend of Mac Duff when they both worked under former Texas coach Dick Tomey in Arizona. We should see immediate improvement from the linebacking corps and the special teams. Interestingly, Akina will handle the defensive play-calling on game days.
We’ll have more thoughts on this news later today.
Sounds like it could happen, but it just doesn’t seem like a good fit. Leach should stay in Texas.
Kirk Bohls thinks Akina should be the new def. coordinator.
WOI-TV out of Des Moines is reporting that Gene Chizik will be announced as the new head coach of the [tag]Iowa State[/tag] Cyclones at a press conference tonight in Ames.
The Iowa State Cyclones have a new Head Football Coach. ABC5 Sports Director John Walters has confirmed the Cyclones have hired University of Texas Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik. Chizik will officially introduced at a news conference tonight at 6 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. ABC5 Sports is in Ames, and will be there all day getting you the latest information. You can see the news conference live on ABC5 Television.
Surprising news on many fronts. Central Michigan’s Brian Kelly was thought to be the front runner for the job lately. I also thought Chizik would hold out for a more high profile position than ISU, but possibly thanks to his defense’s below expectations performance this year he had to lower his aspirations.
If the news turns out to be true, it’ll be interesting to see who the Longhorns pursue to replace Chizik. Would Mack Brown simply promote co-defensive coordinator Duana Akina? His secondary this season certainly didn’t play up to their ability so I’m not sure that would happen. If it is Akina and not some other big name hire, there will probably be some pretty angry Longhorn fans.

First, I was at the game, so I probably couldn’t tell as easily when he was in the game, but it sure seemed like [tag]Sergio Kindle[/tag] was absent pretty much all day at the linebacker spot. The linebackers were getting absolutely dominated throughout the game, and in the second half I kept wondering, why not give Sergio Kindle a shot? Nothing else is working, why not put who many thought was the best high schooler in the land last year in the game.
I know that Kindle has been missing many of his assignments and Chizik hasn’t been too happy with his play, but it sucks to see Texas basically waste a whole year of eligibility on Kindle, when they easily could have red-shirted him. Hopefully Sergio will have a good offseason and learn enough to start next year for the Horns.
Our heart goes out to the Schembechler family and Michigan.
The coach was fired less than one month after suffering a heart attack. That just seems wrong.
I don’t who they think they’ll find that can do any better.
I swear, Aggy related videos can be some of the funniest things ever. This is yet another classic, making fun of the 12 men on the field penalty against the Aggy (ironic no?):
The song is called “Eleven Twelve”, and this version is a remix of the Sesame Street “Pinball Song.” Supposedly the vocals are from the Pointer Sisters, and the remix was done by Braces Tower.
