Bevo XIII The retired Longhorn mascot Bevo XIII died Monday on the ranch in Liberty Hill, Texas where he and Bevo XIV lived. The former world champion steer was 22 years old. He retired before the 2004 season after 16 years as the face of the Longhorns, a tenure that began in 1988 and included a Heisman Trophy and multiple conference titles.

He is what Longhorn fans picture when they think of Bevo, but he may be most remembered for his thoughts on the Nebraska Cornhuskers (pictured below). Bevo XIII will be honored in the new Silver Spurs Bevo Center on November 3rd.

I hope Greg Davis lets McCoy air it out a little more in the right situations.

Three big ones this weekend, two in the always fun Southeast Conference and of course the Red River Shootout (I hate calling it the Red River Rivalry) in Dallas between the Longhorns ans Sooners. If Texas can knock off their rivals from across the border, by the end of the weekend they could be in the driver’s seat for the Big 12 South title. If LSU upsets Florida, Texas is one step closer to rematch with Ohio State on January 8th. Lots of undefeated and one-loss teams and Saturday’s games could clear things up a little more.

Here’s our picks for this Saturday:

Matt and I have begun a series of posts over at the Texas FanHouse looking at Saturday’s game between Texas and [tag]Oklahoma[/tag] at the State Fair of Texas. When two top teams face each other the individual match-ups can decide who wins or who loses.

Here’s the match-ups and which way we think they lean:

Brian Matt ESPN Experts
1. Adrian Peterson 1. Garrett Wolfe 1. Troy Smith
2. Troy Smith 2. Adrian Peterson 2. Adrian Peterson
3. Mike Hart 3. Troy Smith 3. Garrett Wolfe
4. Garrett Wolfe 4. Chris Leak 4. Brady Quinn
5. Chris Leak 5. Calvin Johnson 5. Steve Slaton
Our Thoughts

Brian – My top two stay for the same for one more week as Troy Smith’s performance in Ohio State’s win against Iowa wasn’t strong enough to pass the idle Adrian Peterson. The Oklahoma running back has his chance to win or lose the award this weekend in his matchup with the Longhorns. If the Texas defense can bottle him up and win Saturday’s game, he’ll likely leave college football as one of the best players to never win the award.

Matt – Garrett Wolfe is putting up just too ridiculous of numbers for me not to move him into the top spot. Last week he ran 353 yards and 3 scores! Seriously, that is just crazy. And if you say he isn’t playing anyone, look at what he did against Ohio State, 171 yards rushing and 114 yards receiving. Below him it is pretty standard, although I have added Calvin Johnson as my #5 pick. He is just one of those players you look at and know he is going to be a good NFL player.
