DJ Augustin and Kevin DurantKevin Durant easily swept all the national awards, many by unanimous vote, but he had to share team MVP honors with fellow freshman D.J. Augustin Monday night. Both players were definitely deserving, you could see Augustin’s importance to the team when he hit a wall late in the season and the whole team struggled to get going.

University of Texas freshmen D.J. Augustin and [tag]Kevin Durant[/tag] shared the team’s Most Valuable Player honor in a vote of their peers, highlighting the 2006-07 men’s basketball team banquet held Monday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. Freshman center Dexter Pittman claimed the Lowe’s Home Improvement Most Improved Player Award.

With rumors swirling that Durant will declare for the NBA Draft this week, it could have been his last public appearance as a (current) Longhorn. Durant was the only Longhorn not available to the media at the banquet. Can’t really blame him though, he didn’t want to all the focus to be on him and I’m sure he’s exhausted. There will be a press conference whenever he announces his decision and reporters will have plenty of time to ask him questions then.

I love that the “Most Improved Player” award has a sponsor. They should sell sponsorship for all the awards. We could have the “Blockbuster Online Blocked Shots Award” and the “Acme Brick Worst Field Goal Percentage Award” and rake in the cash.

Kevin Durant drives against New Mexico StateGame just under way in Spokane, Washington and I think there’s more people in my living room watching the game than there in the stadium. Tough trip for fans from New Mexico or Texas but I’m surprised more locals wouldn’t come out to see Kevin Durant and some great basketball in person. [tag]New Mexico State[/tag] could be a tough opponent for the Horns despite being only a #13 seed, Texas will have to play well to win tonight.

I’ll post some random thoughts on the game throughout, hopefully Texas plays up to their ability and can advance to the second round.

First Half
  • HDTV has a sponsor but no actual HD here in Dallas. Is anyone else getting the game in high def?
  • Three minutes or so before [tag]Kevin Durant[/tag] gets his first real touch on offense. New Mexico State is pressing to get us out of our base offense and make it harder to get KD involved. We’ll see if Texas adjusts.
  • Good to see D.J. Augustin off to a good start. Because of the NMSU press he’s been able to find seams in the defense and go hard to the hoop.
  • Reggie Theus kind of looks like a guy from Hustle & Flow.
  • About seven chance at a bucket there and no points for Texas. Good job on the offensive glass but somebody’s got to put the ball in the basket.
New Mexico St. 17, Texas 15
  • DJ better be well rested. NMSU’s defense is really working him out there and he’s having to expend a lot of energy.
  • CBS really has a knack for making sure you don’t get to watch the game you want to. We’re watching other random games instead of going back to our game that’s back under way.
New Mexico St. 24, Texas 19
  • Bullcrap foul called on Augustin.
  • A lot of low scoring games in the first round, including this one.
  • Another terrible call on the charge on Kevin Durant. The NMSU guy was clearly moving. NCAA officials have fallen in love with calling the charge this season and have missed a ton of calls because of it.
  • Augustin and Durant only Horns who have shown up so far tonight. Damion James has been active but needs to finish.
New Mexico St. 27, Texas 24
  • Apparently the refs looked up and noticed they hadn’t called any fouls on Texas because they’ve called four completely awful fouls in the last few minutes now. Cheap.
  • And now a cheap BS call against the Aggies.
  • And after back to back crap calls against James the refs have called back to back bad fouls on NMSU big man.
  • Durant starting to feel it a little.
  • Texas on 12 to 3 run since I put on the lucky game day shirt. I take the blame for the slow start.
New Mexico St. 30, Texas 33
  • Aggies get a couple of looks at the basket but good defense by the Horns to end the half. After trailing for most of the half Texas goes into halftime with the lead.

The whole Texas offense runs through D.J. Augustin and he’s the team’s most important player.

D.J. Augustin says he’ll be back next year, and says Durant is telling teammates he’ll be back too.

Justin Mason drives against UTATexas knocked off UT – Arlington tonight in Austin by 32 points in a game that was still close at halftime. It was an eight point game at the half, but the Horns offense kicked in and they were able to pull away and win by a final score of Texas 84, UTA 52.

[tag]Kevin Durant[/tag] had another great night as he chipped in his usual 21 points and 15 rebounds. The kid is just amazingly solid and consistent, he’s averaging a double-double so far in his freshman season. If he continue this kind of production through Big 12 conference play he’ll be getting freshman POY honors and some All-American mentions as well. [tag]AJ Abrams[/tag] knocked down three more 3-pointers and [tag]DJ Augustin[/tag] continued his great work at the point. Those three players can lead this team a long way with just a little help on defense and the boards from the interior guys.

Great to see big [tag]Dexter Pittman[/tag]’s line for the night: 10 minutes, 4 rebounds, and 9 points. The kid is only going to get better this season and could be a force next year.

The Longhorns begin conference play Saturday at 3pm against Colorado.

Augustin, who wanted to sign on his 18th birthday, completes the class.

Augustin will sign on Thursday. Football really needs an early signing period.

In what is shaping up to be a monumental recruiting class, the Texas basketball team can now add top national point guard DJ Augustin to the list of commits. The 5’11” Augustin out of Houston, displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, is 2006’s sixth commit and chose Texas over LSU.

Rick Barnes needs a raise and a packed Erwin Center.
