After several big hits this weekend left him with tingling in his extremities, [tag]Priest Holmes[/tag] has been forced to retire from the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL. Holmes had played in four games this season after missing two years with a neck injury, but the recurrence of symptoms Sunday made him rethink his comeback.

Video from today’s press conference is below:

Sad to see him have to hang them up after working so hard to come back, but I’m glad Priest is walking away before it’s too late. Neck and brain injuries are nothing to mess around with and his quality of life is much more important than football.

Priest came back again and again and was always the underdog, but he had a heck of an NFL career and for a while was one of the top running backs in the league. He represented the University of Texas well and I enjoyed watching him play for the Horns and for the Chiefs. Thanks for the memories Priest.

It looks like [tag]Priest Holmes[/tag] is on the verge of finally making his NFL return. He returned to the practice field for the Kansas City Chiefs this week for the first time since suffering a spinal injury October 2005. ESPN has video of Priest’s first day back below:

The Chiefs also traded away former #2 running back Michael Bennett, a signal that they’re expecting Holmes to contribute immediately. Larry Johnson is clearly the team’s featured back, I expect Priest to see playing time mostly on third downs due to his excellent receiving and blitz pickup skills. Bennett only carried the ball 20 times in six games but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Holmes get 6 – 8 carries per game once he’s in game shape.

There is still no official word if Holmes will be activated in time to play in this Sunday’s Chiefs – Raiders game, but all signs point to him being ready for a limited role. We’ll have updates when we hear anything new on his status.

Update: The Chiefs have activated Holmes for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Priest Holmes is coming back to the Chiefs. With Larry Johnson’s hold out, if Priest is healthy things could get interesting in Kansas City.
