Feel free to have your own opinion of what Buck Burnette’s punishment should have been and whether a mistake that destroys a team is worse than other criminal offenses, but at least don’t base it on “facts” that you made up yourself.

Sorry if I’m late on this topic, but let me get this straight.

Texas linebacker [tag]Sergio Kindle[/tag] was arrested for driving while intoxicated in the summer of 2007 and got a three-game suspension.

Texas defensive end [tag]Henry Melton[/tag] was arrested for driving while intoxicated in the summer of 2007 and got a three-game suspension.

Texas defensive tackle [tag]Lamarr Houston[/tag] was arrested for driving while intoxicated in September and got a one-game suspension. Here’s a link on all three arrests.

Texas center Buck Burnette posted a text message he received from a friend that contained a racial slur directed at Barack Obama on his Facebook page and was dismissed from the team.

Huh?

Ah, now I see. Look at the depth chart. Kindle, Melton and Houston all start. Burnette was a backup. Hmmmm.

Clearly, discipline needed to be handed out in all four cases. But the Facebook incident is by far the least punishable. Offensive? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Endangering the lives of others? No.

You can’t suspend a guy for one game after a DWI arrest and dismiss another for a Facebook racial slur. It is an insincere attempt to show you run such a clean and virtuous a program that you boot (backup) players when they post stupid, racially insensitive remarks on a Facebook page.

And then you hope nobody notices you start three drunk drivers on defense.

Let’s review those facts…

• Melton, Kindle, and Houston received lighter punishments because they’re starters. – Actually only Houston was a starter at the time of his arrest. Kindle was a second stringer who mainly saw time on special teams while Melton was buried on the depth chart after switching to defense from running back.
• “The Facebook incident is by far the least punishable.” – Actually, threatening the life of the President is a federal offense, but it doesn’t sound like he knew what Burnette actually said. Just today a Spring man was sentenced to 30 months in jail for threatening George W. Bush and another man faces up to 35 years in jail for threats he made on Internet message boards. Sounds pretty serious to me. The first DWI offense in Texas is punishable with up to 180 days in jail.
• Backups don’t matter so it’s okay to punish them. – With the injury this week to starting center [tag]Chris Hall[/tag] the importance of backups is even more clear. Texas will be starting a true freshman at center against [tag]Kansas[/tag] instead of Burnette.

I can see that he’s easily confused.

I’m not sure what fact checking Sports Illustrated does of their FanNation blog, but this article should have never gone up. Despite repeated corrections to the article being posted by commenters the original story still hasn’t been updated or corrected.

Texas senior defensive end [tag]Brian Orakpo[/tag] was named one of four finalists today for the Lombardi Award, given annually to the nation’s top interior lineman. Orakpo has been incredible this season, racking up 26 unassisted tackles, 15 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and nine sacks so far. The winner will be announced on December 10th in Houston.

Three defensive players and one offensive player – three seniors and one junior – were named today as finalists for the 39th Rotary Lombardi Award, presented by Wachovia. This year’s award dinner will be held on December 10 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Downtown Houston. Houston Dynamo President and former Houston Oiler Oliver Luck will be the featured speaker at the event.

University of Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo is the 11th Longhorn finalist. Orakpo is a senior who battled a knee injury for the entire 2007 season but ended the year by earning Defensive MVP honors at the Holiday Bowl. The last winner from Texas was Tony Degrate in 1984.

Founded in the weeks following the 1970 death from cancer of legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, the Rotary Lombardi Award has consistently delivered upon the mission set forth by Marie Lombardi when she granted the use of her late husband’s name. Her only stipulation was that all net proceeds from the event be donated to the American Cancer Society. Millions of dollars have been raised since that time.

Former Longhorns [tag]TJ Ford[/tag] and [tag]Kevin Durant[/tag] matched up Monday night and both had big games. Ford’s Pacers pulled out the win thanks in big part to his 11 fourth quarter points. TJ finished the game close to a triple double with 24 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds. Durant kept the Thunder in it by leading all scorers with 37 points and chipping in eight rebounds.

Former Texas reliever [tag]Huston Street[/tag] has reportedly been traded from the Oakland A’s to the Colorado Rockies in a deal for slugger Matt Holliday (who also happens to be the son of former Texas pitching coach Tom Holliday.) The deal hasn’t been finalized but appears imminent.

The 2005 AL Rookie of the Year saved 18 games for Oakland last season but had none in the final two months of the season as rookie sidearmer Brad Ziegler came on. Colorado is expected to lose close Brian Fuentes to free agency opening a spot at the end of games for the former Horn. Despite being headed to the thin air of Colorado, the chance to be the number one guy in the bullpen makes this a opportunity for Street.

Thanks to a (joyous) [tag]Penn State[/tag] loss the Longhorns have moved up another spot in the latest BCS rankings released Sunday. Thanks to that loss and human voters seeing the error of their ways, Texas is third ahead of [tag]Florida[/tag] and more importantly [tag]Oklahoma[/tag]. The Horns dropped big from number one after their loss to [tag]Texas Tech[/tag] but moved back passed those teams this week in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Harris Poll.

Texas’ ranking against the Sooners is huge on the chance their is a three-way tie between those two teams and the Red Raiders for the Big 12 South. In that scenario the division winner will be determined by which team has the highest BCS ranking. If the Horns end up winning out and in the Big 12 Championship, a win over the North’s representative would likely mean a shot at the whole enchilada.

Texas got back on the horse after a loss with a blowout win over [tag]Baylor[/tag] on Saturday. The team jumped out to a quick lead but mistakes including two interceptions by [tag]Colt McCoy[/tag] let the Bears tie up the game. Eventually McCoy and the Horns righted things and went on to win in a blowout. Watch highlights of the game below:

Can Colt McCoy continue his Heisman-worthy play?

Coming off a loss to [tag]Texas Tech[/tag] that knocked the Longhorns from title favorites to title contenders, the team will look to rebound today against [tag]Baylor[/tag]. Sitting at number four in the BCS rankings if the Horns can take care of their business starting today they could easily climb their way back into things. Baylor is a better team than in year’s past so Texas won’t be able to sleepwalk through this one.

After a tough loss and a week of distractions, can Texas avoid the upset? Find out what we think below:

Brian – This is a huge game for the Longhorns. There are so many reason the team could be headed for a let down against Baylor, coming off a ferocious stretch of games and also coming off a loss. Baylor, led by Robert Griffin, is a solid team that as they showed last week against [tag]Missouri[/tag] can play with anybody these days. Texas is still a class above them and I think the leadership of this team is strong. [tag]Colt McCoy[/tag] and [tag]Jordan Shipley[/tag] are going to get back on track. We’ll also see huge games for linebackers [tag]Sergio Kindle[/tag] and [tag]Roddrick Muckelroy[/tag] as they try to keep Griffin from going off. Texas 48 – Baylor 20

Mike – This game could go two ways. The hangover of last week combined with a dead stadium early Saturday morning against the year in and year out door mat team of the Big 12 could lead to a tightly played, poorly executed ball game. Or Texas could come out and dominate trying to prove a point that last week is in the past. Great teams rebound from a tough loss and while I’m not convinced this UT squad is a great team, I do think they are mentally tough enough to bounce back from a loss that would send some teams into a downward spiral. Texas is bigger, faster, and should be hungrier than a much improved Baylor team. It won’t be the laugher it has been, but Texas wins going away after a slow first quarter. Texas 45 – Baylor 17

The official injury report for [tag]Baylor[/tag] is out and is the worst one of the year. As expected, defensive end [tag]Brian Orakpo[/tag] due to his left knee injury suffered against [tag]Texas Tech[/tag]. Also listed as out for the game are corner [tag]Chykie Brown[/tag] and punter [tag]Trevor Gerland[/tag]. Senior wide receiver [tag]Quan Cosby[/tag] is probable despite his back problems, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get only limited time unless he’s needed.

Ex-Longhorns lineman [tag]Buck Burnette[/tag] has sent a statement to The Associated Press regarding his comments on President-elect Barack Obama that led to his dismissal from the Texas football team. The statement in full is posted below:

There are a lot of false statements and quotes on the internet attributed to me, but regardless, what I did post is indefensible. I made a very bad decision to post on my Facebook a text message that was sent to me in reference to the election. This posting has caused embarrassment and distraction to the University of Texas Football Team.

I was allowed to apologize to the team and part of what I said is listed below:

“First of all I want to say that I apologize for causing a distraction from what this team is trying to accomplish. What I wrote was hurtful not only to people individually but also to the chemistry of this team and the “big picture.” What I wrote was totally inappropriate and immature of me and is not a reflection of how my parents raised me, what I believe, or what this team stands for. I sincerely apologize for offending and or causing any pain by my hurtful comment. I apologize to you coaches for being a distraction and stupidly drawing negative attention to myself when the success of the team is the goal at hand. I apologize to you my team mates for letting you down, not being accountable, and causing dissention among us. Coach Brown I apologize to you for being a distraction and possibly throwing away the priceless opportunity to play football at the University of Texas.”

“This football team has become my life and my family. I think of ALL of you as my brothers and I don’t see color as the measure of a man. A man’s heart is the true teller of his character and I see nothing but my brothers around me when I walk out on the football field with you.”

I sinned against man and God posting what I did. That statement breeds hate and it was never my intention to cause those controversial feelings. The people who know me and know my heart will know this to be true. I have received tremendous support from both black and white players on my team and for that I am truly grateful. For those that remain offended, I hope that over time you will be able to forgive me.

What I wrote on Facebook was a horrible immature mistake. I have no racial feelings towards anyone especially the President Elect of the United States of America. I am proud to call myself an American and I look forward to the progress that President Obama will bring to the people of this great nation. I wish and pray for President Obama to have tremendous success as our president.
