Our good friend the Wiz has video of Texas A&M’s Kellen Heard’s cheap shot on Colt McCoy near the end of Friday’s game. Heard’s hit was late (McCoy was already unbuckling his chin strap), high, and from behind. Not exactly an unexpected move from a kid who wanted to be a Miami Hurricane but didn’t have the academics to get in.

Man was that an ugly pass, Colt clearly wasn’t 100% and had faded by late in the game. Longhorn fans better hope he’s really full strength by the bowl game.

Gator Bowl sounds like pretty good situation.

Our Thoughts

Brian – USC hadn’t impressed me all season but they’ve had two good games in a row and I moved them ahead of Florida in my rankings. If the Gators can beat up Arkansas in the SEC Championship, they still have a chance to move back ahead of USC. Will the national media finally stop overhyping Notre Dame next year? Maybe we can wait till they beat a single ranked team or don’t get blown out when they played good teams before we mention them with the nation’s elite teams.

Matt – It truly pains me to put USC at the #2 spot, but I can no longer deny them that ranking, and I would much rather see them play Ohio State than see a rematch against Michigan. Can you imagine what will happen if another SEC Champion (Florida) gets left out of the National Championship game? It wouldn’t be as bad as the Auburn fiasco, but it still would get people thinking more about a playoff.

WOI-TV out of Des Moines is reporting that Gene Chizik will be announced as the new head coach of the [tag]Iowa State[/tag] Cyclones at a press conference tonight in Ames.

The Iowa State Cyclones have a new Head Football Coach. ABC5 Sports Director John Walters has confirmed the Cyclones have hired University of Texas Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik. Chizik will officially introduced at a news conference tonight at 6 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. ABC5 Sports is in Ames, and will be there all day getting you the latest information. You can see the news conference live on ABC5 Television.

Surprising news on many fronts. Central Michigan’s Brian Kelly was thought to be the front runner for the job lately. I also thought Chizik would hold out for a more high profile position than ISU, but possibly thanks to his defense’s below expectations performance this year he had to lower his aspirations.

If the news turns out to be true, it’ll be interesting to see who the Longhorns pursue to replace Chizik. Would Mack Brown simply promote co-defensive coordinator Duana Akina? His secondary this season certainly didn’t play up to their ability so I’m not sure that would happen. If it is Akina and not some other big name hire, there will probably be some pretty angry Longhorn fans.

After the game, it seemed like there were no real incidents and I felt Horns fans showed some class in their loss to the Aggy. Aggy, however, is not showing much class with some of their latest posts on TexAgs.com. What can you really be thinking to post this kind of stuff…

Colt,

Glad to hear you were able to walk out of the hospital on your own yesterday. Just keep rubbing on the ******* and ******* and all will be well.

While you are taking time to recover, I thought you might like some entertainment. I hope you find the following video interesting:

You see, Colt, Kellen Heard didn’t really lay in to you like he could have. Next year, I fully expect him and the rest of the team to give you the ‘Detmer Special.’

You can also use this recovery time to practice your pouty face in the mirror. I know it will come in handy this time next year.

Oh, and tell your grandmother I said hello.

Your pal,

odessan

Sergio Kindle

First, I was at the game, so I probably couldn’t tell as easily when he was in the game, but it sure seemed like [tag]Sergio Kindle[/tag] was absent pretty much all day at the linebacker spot. The linebackers were getting absolutely dominated throughout the game, and in the second half I kept wondering, why not give Sergio Kindle a shot? Nothing else is working, why not put who many thought was the best high schooler in the land last year in the game.

I know that Kindle has been missing many of his assignments and Chizik hasn’t been too happy with his play, but it sucks to see Texas basically waste a whole year of eligibility on Kindle, when they easily could have red-shirted him. Hopefully Sergio will have a good offseason and learn enough to start next year for the Horns.
