Former Longhorn running back [tag]Cedric Benson[/tag] has signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. Last week two separate Travis county grand juries decided not to indict Benson and less than a week later he’s found a team that needs his services enough to take a chance on him. He had worked out for several teams since being released by the Bears but the lingering legal issues made teams reluctant to sign him.

Benson will come in and back up Chris Perry who is averaging only 2.9 yards per carry so far this season for the Bengals. If he picks up the offense quickly, he should be able to compete for carries and possibly the starting spot.

With running back DeDe Dorsey out for year, the Bengals turned to a star-crossed former first-round pick in Cedric Benson to back up Chris Perry Sunday in Dallas.

Benson joins the Bengals five days after two Travis County grand juries declined to indict him on charges of boating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated. in two spring-time incidents that spurred his release from the Bears.

Dorsey went to season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring injury while Perry’s other backup also nurses a hamstring problem. Kenny Watson, inactive last Sunday, appears to at least be questionable for the Cowboys, leaving only Perry and fullbacks Daniel Coats and Reagan Maui’a as healthy in the backfield.

The most interesting part of the story isn’t that Benson signed with an NFL team so quickly, it’s that the Bengals took another chance on a player with off-field issues. Bengals players over the last several years have repeatedly had run-ins with police and the team is on thin ice with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the issue. The team talked big back in April about community standards when they released WR Chris Henry and then re-signed him four months later. The signing of Benson makes football sense for the team but will likely have public relations repercussions in the city of Cincinnati.

Talk about a crazy weekend in college football. Three of the top four teams go down in upsets, with unbeatable #1 of all-time USC losing to an unranked Oregon State team.

   The clear #1 in the nation after other teams in the Top 5 seemed scared to win. The Texas game in two weeks looks bigger than ever.

2. [tag]Alabama[/tag]

   

   Maybe even more of a butt-kicking than the USC/Ohio State, Alabama got out to a 31-0 lead at Georgia. I think this was a combination of Alabama having a solid team and Georgia being ridiculously over-hyped.

3. [tag]Missouri[/tag]

   

   Good time to have a bye week. Their schedule gets tough now as they open Big 12 play.

4. [tag]LSU[/tag]

   

   LSU didn’t look all that impressive in their win against Mississippi State. They will need to improve their quarterback play if they want to continue to win in the SEC.

5. [tag]Texas[/tag]

   

   Talk about slaughtering the pig against Arkansas. The Texas defense finally showed up and held them to only 3 points for most of the game.

6. [tag]South Florida[/tag]

   

   The class of the Big East continues to look good. Now they start conference play, so we will see if they can keep it up.

7. [tag]Auburn[/tag]

   

   They don’t win pretty, but their defense can keep them in any game. If they actually had a good quarterback they would probably be #2 in the nation.

8. [tag]BYU[/tag]

   

   BYU in the Top 10? Just doesn’t seem right somehow but they are playing great football right now. Two shutouts in a row will usually give a team some confidence.

9. [tag]Penn State[/tag]

   

   I hesitate to put a Big 10 team so far up in the rankings because they will soon get smashed by some other crappy Big 10 team. Will this happen to Penn State? No doubt.

10. [tag]Texas Tech[/tag]

    

    Not sure what to say about Tech except that they probably won’t last much longer with no losses. In fact, they will probably lose to Kansas State.

11. [tag]USC[/tag]

    

    On cue, USC has their one “bare-minimum” game of the season and somehow loses to Oregon State. Now they can cruise for the rest of the season with their easy Pac-10 schedule.

12. [tag]Georgia[/tag]

    

    Not really surprised that they lost to Alabama, more surprised about how they lost. Down 31-0 at the half at home? I knew they were over-rated, just didn’t know it was that bad.

13. [tag]Florida[/tag]

    

    Rounding out the upsets this weekend is Florida. If Tim Tebow was an actual quarterback and could throw the ball, maybe they wouldn’t lose to a mediocre Ole Miss.

    Utah continues to sneak up the polls relatively quietly. Now they have to play the vaunted Oregon State Beavers.

    With Georgia and Florida losing, Vanderbilt now leads the SEC East. If they beat Auburn this weekend is it time for them to start thinking national championship? Ha.

17. [tag]Oklahoma State[/tag]

    

    The Big 12 is absolutely stacked this year. Oklahoma State’s offense can hang with anyone. Too bad they play @Missouri, @Texas, and @Texas Tech.

19. [tag]Ohio State[/tag]

    

    Not sure that a 13 point win over Minnesota is very impressive, but a win is a win. Terrelle Pryor looks like a legit college quarterback. I bet they are wishing he played more against USC.

    Hard to get a read on just how good or bad the Pac-10 is. My guess is that Oregon will be dropping soon as they play USC this weekend.

21. [tag]Virginia Tech[/tag]

    

    Man, Virginia Tech has an incredibly weak schedule this season. If they didn’t lose to East Carolina they would easily be in the Top 10.

22. [tag]Wisconsin[/tag]

    

    The Big 10 is just awful and I think Wisconsin proves that. Not sure how a Top 10 team loses to a horrible Michigan team. Oh yeah, it’s the crappy Big 10.

23. [tag]Maryland[/tag]

    

    Maryland actually looks like they have a good team this year. The ACC is wide open right now and Maryland should be near the top at the end.

24. [tag]Fresno State[/tag]

    

    Pretty impressive win at UCLA.

25. [tag]Connecticut[/tag]

    

    Impresive win at Louisville. They will be tested in next two games of three straight road games. If they can make it through that, they will be looking good.

Derrick Johnson forces a fumble

A few players on bye weeks plus a few more injured made it a slow week for the ex Texas Longhorns in the NFL. The biggest performance this week came from Kansas City linebacker [tag]Derrick Johnson[/tag] who did a little of everything in the Chiefs win over the Broncos. Here is a look at how those who played faired:

[tag]Justin Blalock[/tag] – The former Texas tackle has been a fixture for the Atlanta Falcons this year at left guard. Running back Michael Turner continues to be very impressive this year, and a lot of his runs come behind the ex UT star.

[tag]Jamaal Charles[/tag] – The rookie continues to be a third down back for the Chiefs. Charles had 7 yards on 2 carries while adding 2 receptions for only a yard. His team won their first game of the season.

[tag]Phil Dawson[/tag] – The Browns kicker helped win them win their first game by going 2 for 2 on field goals and extra points.

[tag]Cedric Griffin[/tag] – Cedric got picked on all night by a weak Tennessee Titan wide receiver group. Offenses have continued to choose to pick on Cedric every week and will continue to until he makes some plays.

[tag]Michael Griffin[/tag] – Michael is quickly becoming the best player out of the great secondary on UT’s 2005 championship team. Griffin’s defense continues to be one of the best in the league. He contributed 3 tackles and a pass break up in the Titan win over the Vikings.

[tag]Ahmard Hall[/tag] – One of the only true fullbacks left in the league. The ex Marine had a great block on a touchdown run by rookie Chris Johnson.

[tag]Quentin Jammer[/tag] – Jammer had 3 tackles and 2 pass breakups against a weak Oakland passing attack.

[tag]Derrick Johnson[/tag] – The former Longhorn star was the defensive MVP for the Chiefs adding 6 tackles and interception while being all over the field. As he did frequently while at Texas he also had a forced fumble that led to a one-play scoring drive for KC’s first win of the season.

[tag]Brian Robison[/tag] – In his second game back, Robison recorded 2 tackles in a reserve role.

[tag]Shaun Rogers[/tag] – Rogers was at his all pro level on Sunday, compiling a sack and clogging up the middle in a Cleveland win.

[tag]Bo Scaife[/tag] – Scaife has been slow to build chemistry with replacement quarterback Kerry Collins. He had 3 catches for only 17 yards in the game.

[tag]Nathan Vasher[/tag] – “ESPN” 3 had three tackles and three pass breakups in the Bears big win over the Eagles.

[tag]Selvin Young[/tag] – Selvin had an average day, rushing 11 times for 49 yards. The Broncos never got anything going in the upset loss to the Chiefs.

Thanks to upsets losses by USC, [tag]Georgia[/tag], and [tag]Florida[/tag] the Longhorns have vaulted into the top five of both the AP and USA Today Coaches polls. [tag]Alabama[/tag] flew past the Horns after their win over the UGA but the easy win over [tag]Arkansas[/tag] was enough to move Texas up to spots to the number five ranking. Texas is relatively comfortably ahead of [tag]Penn State[/tag] in both polls, but rankings this week don’t matter much as Texas will prove itself over the next three weeks when they face [tag]Oklahoma[/tag] and [tag]Missouri[/tag] in consecutive games.

Senior fullback [tag]Luke Tiemann[/tag] is done for the year after tearing the ACL in his left knee during the Texas win over [tag]Arkansas[/tag]. Despite scholarship offers from other Division 1A schools, the young man out of Pflugerville decided to walk on at Texas. Tiemann started games at fullback during both his sophomore and junior seasons while also spending time at defensive end and contributing on special teams. His efforts earned him a scholarship before the beginning of this season.

Longhorn senior fullback Luke Tiemann sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee in Texas’ 52-10 victory over Arkansas on Saturday, and will require season-ending surgery, UT Head Athletic Trainer for Football Kenny Boyd confirmed Sunday.

“It’s really disappointing that this injury is cutting my senior year short,” Tiemann said. “Being a part of this team has meant so much to me, and although I can’t help the team on the field, I’ll still be right here with my teammates cheering them on and helping any way I can while I’m rehabbing and finishing school.”

Tiemann is a fifth-year fullback who has also played defensive end and contributed on special teams during his 34-game career. He began his career as a walk-on and earned a scholarship in August 2008 after making the switch to fullback midway through 2006. He had played in all four games in 2008.

In 2007, Tiemann saw action in 11 games, including one start, at fullback and on special teams. He played in all 13 games at fullback and on special teams in 2006 and also saw limited action on defense at linebacker. The Pflugerville native is a 2007 first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and a six-time member of UT’s Athletics Director’s Honor Roll.

“Luke is one of our great senior leaders,” said head coach Mack Brown. “He got a standing ovation when we presented him his scholarship in August, and he has, and will continue to have, a great impact on this team. He is as tough as they come, and has contributed so much from the full back position and on special teams. On top of that, he is an outstanding student. His presence on the field will be missed and someone will have to step up to fill his void.”

The Longhorns played their most complete game of the season in Saturday’s 52 – 10 thrashing of former SWC foe [tag]Arkansas[/tag]. The offense was sharp from the very first snap of the game and the defense dominated their SEC opponent. The victory was one of the most lopsided in the series’ long and storied history.

Texas blew out [tag]Arkansas[/tag] 52-10 Saturday thanks to big plays, near perfection from [tag]Colt McCoy[/tag], and an impressive defensive showing. It was great to see the Texas defensive front seven really get after the quarterback, something that will need to continue in conference play in order to protect the young secondary.

Somehow the video quality from these highlights almost looks better than the live game did in standard definition on ABC yesterday. Hopefully the Horns have played their last SD game of the season now that they’re playing real opponents.

Mack Brown and Bill Murray

Comedian Bill Murray is in Austin for the Fantastic Fest film festival and stopped by to visit the Texas football facilities. He wanted to see DKR – Texas Memorial Stadium and was able to get a tour of that, Mack Brown’s office, and met briefly with Mack and a few players. Mack kissed babies, gave Murray a Texas jersey with his name on the back, and in general did his thing all in a brief 90 second meeting.

MB-TF.com was able to sit down for a quick interview with Murray and has also posted some photos as well. Read a few of the questions below:

Are you a big fan of college football in general: I am. It’s more fun. I’m from Illinois, but I really adored when Texas beat Southern Cal, because I thought that was good for the world. I thought that was great. I root more of the Illinois teams, because that’s where I’m from. But I’d like to see Illinois and Texas face off, because they both wear a variant of the orange. The burnt orange versus the orange from the Illini would be sort of like a Darwinian kind of war about which species of the orange would survive.

Are you planning on coming to the game: Well, I might. I’m getting caught up in the excitement. I’ve got an orange shirt now.

Do you see [Austin] as diverse and artistic as its reputation: I can see that. The fellow who was giving us a ride around town has a sticker on his computer that says, ‘Keep Austin Weird.’ I guess that’s a popular sentiment. But there seems like there are a lot of ‘individuals’ here. It seems more relaxed than maybe the impression a lot of people have of Texas. It’s very relaxed and I like the way the city lays out. I like the look of the buildings. Obviously there are new buildings going up, but I like the older buildings. I did see the Paggi House, which is being redone on the inside, but the few neighborhoods we’ve driven through, I like the way they felt. It seems like it would be a very pleasant place to live.
