Our Thoughts

Brian – I don’t know how many of you watched it (how dumb is it to schedule a west coast game at 8 pm local time??), but Reggie Bush was flat out ridiculous Saturday night. Fresno State’s defense isn’t exactly stout, but Reggie’s 294 yards on 23 carries was pretty remarkable. He just looked like he was on another level than anyone else on the field. Throw in his receiving and kick returns and he put up 512 total yards on the night. Definitely made this a two horse race between him and Vince.

It seems like every week the media forgets about all the weeks before and just hand the award to whoever had the best game that week. A ton of media experts have already handed the trophy to Bush, but that can certainly change. When Vince had 506 total yards against Oklahoma State (and didn’t play the entire game because Texas won by 20 points) everyone was exclaiming that he was clearly the Heisman favorite. Then he blew up passing the next two games (579 yards and 6 TD’s in 2 halves of football) and he pulled away even more in most Heisman polls.

If Vince goes out on national TV against Texas A&M on Friday and in the Big 12 Championship game and puts up a couple of his typical dominating performances, he’ll have a VERY good chance to become everyone’s favorite once again.

Matt – USC almost lost to a tough Fresno State team that just wouldn’t quit, which would have given Vince the Heisman. And obviously, if it weren’t for Reggie Bush USC would have lost that game, but I think everyone just needs to settle down a bit about Reggie. It was a great game for sure, but now people are calling him the “Best College Football Player of All-Time.â€? Give me a break. It is easy for someone with his speed to gain those kind of yards when you don’t get touched at the line of scrimmage. I am also tired of seeing his 500+ total yards of offense. I don’t care about his kickoff/punt return yards, and that is only going to continue the hype machine that is Reggie. Vince is still the best player in college football.

Vince needs to put up some ridiculous numbers to get the public back in his favor. And is it just me or did I hear that 11 Heisman voters have already sent in their ballots? How can this happen?

Update: Want to see a Sobbing Sooner? Click here.

As they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words. If you know any OU fans that are complaining about the Texas Tech touchdown, just show them this picture. (OU still has justified beef about that 4th and 3 play though.)

Texas Tech touchdown versus Oklahoma

Thanks to AgRyan04, we now have video of the touchdown. Still looks like a touchdown to me.

Note: Video requires Flash Player 8 be installed in order to play properly.

Much too close of a game for my tastes. I was really surprised by how sloppy Texas played, and it almost cost them the game. Texas committed 24 turnovers, with 9 of them coming from Daniel Gibson. That is something that you just cannot have from the point guard position. But if you take away the turnovers, Texas absolutely dominated this game. Texas had 40 rebounds to West Virginia’s 19 and Texas shot 54.2% while holding West V to 47.5%.

The main thing that I took away from the game is that we need to figure out a way to get the ball to Aldridge a lot more. I just don’t see too many people being able to guard him down low. Aldridge ended up finishing the game an impressive 7-10 from the field for 15 points and added 14 rebounds.

He also played a big part in the end of the game scoring the winning basket with 3.6 seconds left. And if that wasn’t enough, he had the final block of the game as Gansey went to the rim for a wide open lay-up and Aldridge came out of nowhere to block the shot. One thing to note though is that none of this would have happened if it wasn’t for the fact that West V missed 3 front-ends of a one-in-one, 2 by Pittsnogle (I would change my name if I were him).

And on a side note, was it just me or were the refs frustrating in the second half? Texas never seemed to get a foul called their way and West Virginia seemed like they were getting everything. The game was definitely physical, but if you are going to call the game like that you have to let it go on both ends.

I still think LSU will catch back up though with probably 2 games remaining.

It’s all tied up ladies and gentlemen. Last week Brian stopped getting lucky and the truth finally came out. I just dominated him, gaining 4 picks back in ONE week. This weekend is Rivarly Week in college football, and there are definitely some huge games out there.

Alabama faces Auburn, in basically a must win for each team. If Alabama wins, they are SEC West champs, otherwise Auburn has a chance to win the SEC West if LSU tanks. Ohio State/Michigan also tips off this weekend. If Penn State loses, one of these teams has a chance to get to the top of the Big 10. Should be a good game to watch with Ted Ginn Jr., Santonio Holmes, Steve Breaston, and Jason Avant all on the field.

Here’s our picks for this week:

Our Thoughts

Brian – Vince Young has pulled so far ahead that he can barely see the two Trojans in his rear view mirror. Matt Leinart is having a fantastic season and his stats are actually better than last year, but Vince is more valuable, more dangerous, and is putting up equally impressive numbers. Reggie Bush’s hype has barely died down despite putting up only 82 yards against a bad Cal defense, if he has a 60 yard punt return against UCLA and the national media will be saying he’s the runaway leader again. Yet last year, Cedric Benson’s fantastic numbers were downplayed because he rushed for “only” 90 yards against a tough Oklahoma D. Does that make any sense?

Elvis Dumervil is my token defender/fat guy on the list again this week. When’s the last time anyone other than a QB or running back had a chance? Charles Woodson?

Matt – Not sure that I understand why ESPN has Jerome Harrison on their list. Washington State is 3-7 and have been consistently inconsistent all year.

Michael Robinson has definitely picked up his game this year. Robinson is 131-252 for 1,992 yards with 15 TDs and 9 interceptions. He also has rushed for 695 yards and 10 TDs on 133 carries. Not bad at all.

Thankfully everyone is finally seeing that Reggie Bush has been getting too much hype. I am tired of seeing how many “total” yards Bush has. Who cares how many punt return yards he has? I don’t and neither should the voters.

Very impressive throw. Most pro QB’s probably couldn’t do that.
