WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Rebels.

David Ash had a career game against the Ole Miss Rebels.

David Ash had a career game against the Ole Miss Rebels. (Statesman)

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH Hotty Toddy?! Wonder if Kenny Vaccaro liked this loud cheer? “Hotty Toddy, Gosh Almighty, Who The Hell Are We, Hey! Flim Flam, Bim Bam. Ole Miss By Damn!” Some of the 61,797 fans threw their toddy’s from the stands at the Longhorn players.

1st Quarter (9:41) WTH Edmond?! The first of three interceptions that the Horns collected as this INT went for a TD for LB Steve Edmond. Not too many other bright spots for the defense this game.

2nd Quarter (13:35) WTH Semper Fi?! The always Faithful Marquise Goodwin can be relied upon to make the big play. Marquise took a jet sweep 69 yards to the delight of a Marine in the end zone.

Halftime WTH Chicken?! If you’re going to be a “streaker” you need to be more committed like the hog (bacon). A man wearing boxers ran right to the middle of the SEC logo and mooned the crowd before getting tackled by the popo. Guess this fan doesn’t like the SEC either.

3rd Quarter (10:39) WTH Starving?! The feed WR Donte Moncrief t-shirts in the stands were spot on. Seven catches for 144 yards with a 75 yard touchdown when this Rebel out dueled Carrington Byndom.

3rd Quarter (2:30) WTH Short Arm?! David Ash said “I think I mastered the underthrow.” His 46 yard shot put gave Mike Davis the chance to make a play on the ball for a TD that helped the Horns reach half a hundred. Wonder if this is the new version of the back shoulder throw that is done in the NFL.

3rd Quarter (:00) WTH Color Blind?! ESPN announcer Mark Jones said that nothing matches with burnt orange as the quarter ended. Mark forgot that everything goes good with that color when the Longhorns put up over 676 yards which ties for the second best yardage total all time.

4th Quarter (11:27) WTH Karate Kid?! A career game for David Ash while wearing his signature Ralph Macchio headband. He threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns which included the last TD throw to Marquise Goodwin for 55 yards and the final tally 66-31.

Next up for the Longhorns is a bye week before going to play the Cowboys in Stillwater on September 29th.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Lobos.

Mike Davis touchdown against New Mexico

Mike Davis had a big touchdown just before the half against New Mexico. (AP Photo)

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH Coin Toss?! It was tough to watch Earl Campbell with his cane slowly walking to midfield. I do still love watching highlights of the Tyler Rose running over and past people. I am glad that DKR did a better sales job than the Bootlegger Boy.

1st Quarter (8:50) WTH VY?! I know that Vince Young has moved on, so who was running 49 yards for a TD from the quarterback position. David Ash had another solid game (16-22 for 221 yards) with no turnovers. I hope he continues to avoid the oskies.

1st Quarter (:00) WTH TOP?! I understand the concept of bending but not breaking when you describe a defense, but these Horns were T-O-P to death to start the game. The Lobos held the time of possession for 12 minutes and picked up 7 of its 16 first downs in the first quarter.

2nd Quarter (15:00) WTH Wendy?! Wendy’s restaurant brought back former UT kicker Ryan Bailey to kick a 40 yard field goal for everyone to win a frosty. I guess the Nebraska game in 2006 was nothing compared to the pressure of feeding 100,990 fans. He missed.

2nd Quarter (9:55) WTH Fans?! I know the UT players would like the fans to be louder. You can see the kids waving their towels to get the crowd going. The home crowd did cause a delay of game for the Lobos when the Godzillatron screamed for NOISE.

2nd Quarter (5:54) WTH Error?! I guess I have a new nickname for Nick Jordan. The kicker missed another 40+ yard field goal. I think the frosty giveaway also affected Error Jordan. Fera where are you?!

3rd Quarter (12:12) WTH Daje?! Wow. Pure speed. Daje Johnson took a shovel pass for 45 yards to pay dirt to take control of the game. Glad he did not choose his first love which was basketball.

4th Quarter (:00) WTH Critics?! I have heard a lot of critics say how this team is not dominating. Granted it does take this team takes a while to get going, but isn’t a shutout a pretty good start to the season. There is no preseason for these boys to tune up, so next week’s road game will probably show us what type of team we can expect.

Next up for the Longhorns is their first road game against the Ole Miss Rebels on September 15th.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Cowboys.

DJ Monroe touchdown vs Wyoming

DJ Monroe showed speed AND strength on his TD run against Wyoming. (AP Photo)

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH WHY-O?! Not exactly a uniform statement like Oregon. The Cowboys had the letters WYO on the front of the jerseys. Way to step out on the cool side. While on the subject of uniforms I hate the Longhorns practice jerseys. Never replace the Storm Trooper White uniforms when we go on the road.

1st Quarter (4:02) WTH LHN?! The LHN camera crew had a rough night. The Godzillatron went pink, then fuzzy, then out for a few minutes. The camera crew kept missing highlights of the plays for the video board. The LHN group must have been partying the night before after AT&T U-Verse decided to pony up for the network.

2nd Quarter (15:00) WTH Putters?! It was great to recognize the UT Golf Team for their accomplishment of winning a National Title. Glad we can beat Alabama at something.

2nd Quarter (9:40) WTH Vaccaro?! Kenny Vaccaro was all over the place, and he picked off his first of many footballs this season when he jumped the route to get the momentum back for the Horns.

2nd Quarter (4:48) WTH Statue?! The play that keeps OU fans up at night. Nice execution by David Ash to Malcolm Brown. It was great to see Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown each post 100 yard games.

2nd Quarter (3:44) WTH Tightrope?! It was nice to see the Wild Formation which Bergeron gave the ball to a streaking DJ Monroe for a touchdown. Are we going to call it the Wild Joe?

4th Quarter (14:50) WTH Ash?! The only turnover of the game put a little scare into most of the 101,142 fans in attendance. David Ash did have a solid game 20-27 for 156. If only one of his long distance connections to Mike Davis would have made the state line look a lot better

4th Quarter (4:28) WTH Jordan?! We are going to have a lot of sleepless nights if the field goal kicking does not get better. Nick Rose can definitely handle the kickoff duties, but so far Nick Jordan leaves something to be desired when trying to split the up rights. Misses of 46 and 44 plus a botched extra point is not the legacy of kicking on the 40 acres.

Longhorn Network is now on AT&T U-verseIt was rumored on Orangebloods and Hookem.com earlier this week but early this morning the Longhorn Network went live for AT&T U-verse customers across the country. Longhorn fans everywhere are dancing in the streets over the news that they’ll get the chance to watch the season kickoff tomorrow against Wyoming live on LHN.

There wasn’t an official press release until late this morning, but LHN started showing up as channel 1609 (standard def 609) sometime overnight and by the 8am Twitter was blowing up with fans and former Horns fired up about getting access to the network.

Adding U-verse probably triples the number of people in the state of Texas that now have access to the network and gives them a second large national carrier (along with Verizon FiOS.) This is great news for Texas fans and could help nudge Time Warner, Comcast, DirecTV, et. al. into adding the network as well.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Red Raiders.

David Ash runs for a big gain against Texas Tech

David Ash runs for a big gain against Texas Tech.

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH Skies?! We owe a big debt to the men and women of the Armed Forces that were in attendance and for those who have lost their life which were shown on the Jumbotron. I thought it was a good sign when the first of the parachute team landed right in the middle of the field on the Longhorn logo. Cool!

1st Quarter (9:45) WTH Academy?! I understand that you need to get the Red Raiders out of rhythm and try to slow them down, but do you really need that performance. Emmanuel Acho apparently was trying to get off the field when the coaching staff told him to stay on the ground. Acho did is best acting job by hitting the turf so that he can be escorted off by the training staff. One play later Acho makes a crucial stop to limit Tech to field goal. And the Academy Award goes to…

2nd Quarter (6:56) WTH Royal?! Fozzy Whittaker ran the wildcat formation to perfection to put two rushing touchdowns on the board and later handing the ball to a streaking D.J. Monroe for another. The Horns racked up 439 yards of rushing with an attitude that has not been seen around here for a while. Wonder if these young Horns remember Coach Royal’s speech about how three things can happen when you pass and two of ’em are bad.

Halftime WTH Zorro?! I know that UT Band uniforms look a little outdated, but come on Texas Tech. I believe I have seen that outfit at a local Mexican food establishment. Need salsa with that sir?

3rd Quarter (2:45) WTH Ash?! The future of our passing attack was clearly shown when David Ash threw one of his only seven attempts for a strike to a fast moving target like Marquise Goodwin for 37 yards. David Ash is growing up before our eyes. I really liked the decision by Ash to tuck it and run for 47 yards to end the first quarter.

4th Quarter (1:01) WTH Hat?! Red Raiders offense is the epitome of “All Hat No Cattle”. The offense runs up and down the field for 381 yards of passing but can only score 20 points with the last touchdown coming very late in the game.

End of the Game WTH Mizzou?! I know the Big 12 is not the most stable group of teams, but you could see some semblance of getting their act together with the additions of TCU and WVU. A&M wanted out before the season even started. Missouri really started all of this flirting when they saw the Big 10 looking around. Radio personality Paul Finnebaum had a great line when describing the Tigers move to the SEC. A&M is the abused girl looking for a new boyfriend; Missouri is the homely girl at the end of the bar that no one really wants.

Next up for the Longhorns is probably the last meeting with the Tigers at 11 AM on November 12th.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Cowboys.

Brandon Weeden steps out of the end zone

Texas was a half step away from a game changing defensive TD by Blake Gideon.

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH Fans?! The Longhorns are 4-1 and need some support after the Oklahoma beat down, and the UT fans struggle to get to the game. Announced attendance was 100,101 but there were clearly tons of empty seats.

1st Quarter (9:49) WTH Ash?! We now know who the QB is for the moment. David Ash played the entire game. The freshmen mistakes keep coming with an interception driving into OSU territory. The best bet for the Horns is one signal caller. Hope the turnover bug will get flushed out of Ash soon.

2nd Quarter (14:46) WTH Brown?! Great day by Malcolm Brown with the first of his two touchdowns to start the second quarter. Brown finished with his first century day of his career (135 yards) with many more to come.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Sooners.

Pre-Game (15:00) WTH Defer?! Is it me or do we lack that killer instinct? What a great opportunity to take a young team and attack on offensive first after winning the coin toss. Horns chose to defer to the second half. I will defer to the 96,000 plus in attendance, but I believe no one liked the choice of shirt by Mack Brown with the Longhorn on the pocket.

1st Quarter (9:30) WTH McCoy?! This would be the first of many turnovers for the Longhorns. A sack and subsequent fumble by Case McCoy was later turned into an OU field goal. I guess Case forgot his horseshoe. Great job by the defense to bend but not break in the first quarter, but that was about the change quickly.

2nd Quarter (15:00) WTH Diaz?! Understand that you were trying to play coverage most of the day, but there were no blitzes of memory that were up the middle to disrupt the timing of Landry Jones. An easy lob over the UT defense to Kenny (crazy hair) Stills was a sign of bad things to come to start the second quarter.

2nd Quarter (2:50) WTH Ash?! The Horns are a young team… young team… young team (trying to justify the mistakes). I just wish they had not made a whole season’s worth in one game. David Ash was trying to make something happen by throwing across his body to the waiting arms of OU Demontre Hurst who rambled 55 yards for the first of three defensive touchdowns to establish the Red River Rout.

2nd Quarter (2:38) WTH Cap’n America?! One of the few bright spots was Fozzy Whittaker (aka Captain America) 100 yard kickoff return to bring the north side of the stadium to its feet. Thanks Fozzy for the highlight.

2nd Quarter (:31) WTH Dagger?! After the kickoff return by Fozzy, the OU offense dialed up a quick 8 play drive to the end zone to retake the mojo for a 34-10 lead into halftime.

This year's OU game quickly slipped away from Mike Davis and Texas.

This year's OU game quickly slipped away from Mike Davis and Texas.

3rd Quarter (8:12) WTH One Play?! I have heard of offensive efficiency but this is ridiculous. OU Dominic Whaley takes the hand off at its own 36 and is never touched for a 64 yard touchdown. I guess every play is drawn up to score… this one did.

4th Quarter (12:29) WTH Davis?! I am sorry kid but I am going to have to bust you on this one. The OU defensive back rips the ball away from Mike Davis and takes it 56 yards to the house. I thought our problem was not catching the ball, now we have to hope you hold on to it?!

Next up for the Longhorns are the Cowboys as they host to Oklahoma State for the game on Oct. 15th.

Last night we were treated to a show in Ames, Iowa when the Longhorns came in and started from the onset of annihilating the Iowa State Cyclones. It was a steady dose of passing and running throughout the game. While most Longhorn fans were confident that this would be a sure victory, after last season’s fiasco, there had to some within the Longhorn family that was nervous and worried, because this Iowa State team had pulled an upset that nobody saw coming already this season. This was going to be a nice challenge for the Horns before their annual rivalry game with Oklahoma.

Most fans would have been happy to see a team with a consistent movement and be able to show a chance at making some big plays. What Longhorn fans were treated to was somewhat of an offensive clinic from Case McCoy and David Ash. Both Quarterbacks showed a pocket presence that would go beyond their youthfulness, and showed some flash of excitement as the starting quarterbacks. While they are young and inexperienced, they have shown the ability that keeps both of them getting snaps and alternating in the offense.

While Iowa State is not an Oklahoma caliber team, there is a lot of hope building within the fan base that the Longhorns will be able to steal a big win in Dallas next weekend. A win like this is just a building block for a young team that should help lay the foundation for the future. The only puzzling question is going to be who will win the starting position outright?

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Bruins.

1st Quarter (15:00) WTH Bruin Fans?! I have never seen so many empty seats at the Rose Bowl (54,583 in attendance). The Rose Bowl is a beautiful venue, but it was an eye sore with the overhead shots of the stadium where there were plenty of seats to be had.

1st Quarter (12:35) WTH Prince?! UCLA QB Kevin Prince was in a royal mood by supplying the greatest of all gifts which were three interceptions all in the first quarter. The prince became a pauper and sat the bench for the rest of the game.

2nd Quarter (11:36) WTH Malcolm?! We have to call out the freshmen’s first touchdown run of his career as a Longhorn. Malcolm Brown had a spectacular day finishing with 110 yards while running for his first touchdown with only one shoe on. Wonder what he will do to top that feet on his next TD run?

2nd Quarter (:58) WTH Flag Football?! It is amazing to see how Marquise Goodwin has set the tone for this team with his speed and blocking. The hit that laid out the UCLA defender was a thing of beauty to spring Mike Davis for a nice reception. The referee thought that they played two hand touch in California when he threw the flag for the personal foul.

2nd Quarter (:21) WTH Horseshoe 1?! Shout out to Beau Edge from 104.9 The Horn to give the ultimate description for Case McCoy. Not a great practice player and not the measurable you would see from a top ranked prospect but the kid has a golden horseshoe up his butt and he just makes plays. Case scrambles around and makes something out of nothing by hitting Mike Davis for a 25 yard play that eventually leads to another touchdown before the half.

3rd Quarter (9:45) WTH Horseshoe 2?! Case McCoy delivers another crazy play when he throws up a prayer that is tipped by the UCLA defender right into the waiting arms of Mike Davis for 45 yards. Case will make more mistakes as he is growing into the leader of this team. But it does seem that he has the IT factor that we all want from the position.

3rd Quarter (1:40) WTH Harsin?! Coach Harsin is demonstrating how to operate an offense when he uses the wildcat formation to spring Fozzy Whitaker in for a back braking touchdown to put the Horns up by 22 points. Hope that Coach Applewhite is learning the play calling skills because Harsin will be head coach sooner than the Horn fans want to think about it.

4th Quarter (12:29) WTH DB’s?! What a coming out party for this young secondary. Adrian Phillips, Kenny Vaccaro, and Carrington Byndom all had interceptions. But Adrian needs to be singled out for the ferocious hit he delivered to force the ball out from the UCLA receiver which was recovered by Blake Gideon. Great job by the defense to switch momentum after the Horns suffered a fumble deep in their own territory.

Next up for the Longhorns are the Cyclones as they travel to Ames for the game on Oct. 1st.

At the Start of the season, I was figuring Texas was looking to bounce back with a solid 8 win campaign and I had them being 2-1 after the first three games, but that was the best case scenario. Fast forward to the season and the Longhorns just had their way with UCLA and are now 3-0. This is a surprising revelation for any fan, even the most optimistic and diehard fan had to figure that a 3 -0 start wasn’t in the cards for this team.

Given the fact that Garret Gilbert was the starting quarterback, there wasn’t any sign of hope for this to happen.

Thankfully Mack and the coaching staff came to their senses and decided to hand over the starting job to Case McCoy and David Ash. This is why the Longhorns left Los Angeles with a victory. These two quarterbacks are an exciting combination and have energized the offense and will help this young team build on an already magnificent start. Nobody thinks this team will go undefeated and compete for a championship, but with each game and another win, something special could happen. This is where the coaching and youth need to find a happy medium, but the youth can mature this season, and start building the foundation towards something special in the future.

Right now Texas is 3-0, but with some luck and preparation, they could easily make it to the October showdown in Dallas with an undefeated record. But that is still a ways off, and nobody should start looking ahead. The fans and the team need to take it one game at a time, one series at a time and let the momentum build to where the football gods will let it go. There are some exciting things happening on the 40 acres, and as long as the coaches let the team learn and build, things will fall into place. Who expected this to happen after the disaster from last year?
